Background
St Jude’s Church Council has the responsibility of co-operating with the incumbent, The Revd Canon Judith Allford, in promoting in the ecclesiastical parish the whole mission of the Church, pastoral, evangelistic, social and ecumenical. It also has maintenance responsibilities for the Church of St Jude’s, St Jude’s Road, Englefield Green and for the Church Hall in Bond Street, Englefield Green.
Membership
Members of the Council are either ex-officio or elected by the Annual Church Meeting in accordance with the Church Representation Rules.

Meetings ad hoc to discuss Council proposals and explore stewardship issues.
Fabric Committee/Health and Safety Committee
Meetings generally informal to discuss matters as they arise including issues related to Covid-19.

Report on our worship
We continued to see a slight increase in the number of our regular worshippers but remain saddened that we see very few younger worshippers.
We maintained our established pattern of worship throughout the year.
8.00am Sunday
A service of Holy Communion (said) with BCP service on the first Sunday of each month.
9.30am Sunday
Sung Eucharist (live-streamed) with the first Sunday service taken from the Methodist liturgy. Our intention remained to offer a non-Eucharistic service on a Fifth Sunday except where this is a major festival.
4.00pm Sunday
Fourth Sunday at Four: a non-eucharistic worship service with hymns.
6.00pm Sunday
Compline via Zoom on the second Sunday in each month.
10.00am Wednesday
Midweek service of Holy Communion (said) with a short sermon. During Lent this service was moved to 11.00am and was followed by a simple Lenten lunch.
As always, we had a full programme of festival services which once again included a Christingle service in December for some of our local uniformed groups. Our Christmas Crib service was hugely well attended as usual and there was record attendance too at our Christmas Carol Service, when our choir was once again augmented by the Allegra Choir directed by our AV co-ordinator, Guy Bunce.
In 2025 we hosted two village memorial services: F. Harrison and Son, Funeral Directors sponsored our summer service for a third year and Lodge Brothers our Christmas memorial service for a fifth year. The Remembrance Sunday parade service took place as usual in November with excellent attendance from our local uniformed groups.
Our Vicar formally retired in August 2025 but we are very fortunate in that she agreed to stay on in a part-time capacity, working Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesday mornings although she has also taken some services and funerals on the remaining days. We are very grateful indeed for her continued ministry. We also remain grateful to our team of worship leaders, including our Methodist Associate Minister, the Revd Lansford Penn-Timity and Deacon Jacqueline Esama-John, who joined us in September following the retirement of the Revd Andrew Reed, our Licensed Lay Minister, Mr Roy Gouriet and our occasional preacher, Mrs Diana Bendall, for their continued contribution to our worship. On occasions when the Vicar was absent, we benefitted from the ministry of the Revd Janet Franck (retired and with Permission to Officiate in the Diocese of Guildford). Thank you to Roy Gouriet who co-ordinates our preaching rota. Roy's Permission to Officiate was renewed once again in 2025.
Thank you to our regular teams of readers and intercessors and to Mrs Diana Bendall for co-ordinating this ministry. It has been good to welcome some new members to our readers' rota, including two of our young worshippers, Leo and Isaac. Special thanks are due to our organist, Geoff Chew and to our choir for leading our music in worship. In October, we introduced an organ scholarship scheme.
There are many others who contribute to our worship in vital, but perhaps less obvious ways. They include our church cleaning team, flower arrangers, members of our live-streaming rota and all who provide refreshments to follow our services. Thank you all.
Occasional Services
During the year there were 8 baptisms (7 in 2024), 3 weddings (4), 18 funerals in Church (15), 8 funerals conducted by our vicar in local crematoria (8), 1 graveside funeral conducted by our vicar (1).
Church Council meetings
The Church Council met on 22nd January, 3rd March, 10th April, 2nd July, 30th July, 15th September and 4th November. The APCM was held on Sunday 18th May.
We are grateful to our Churchwardens, Church officers, Council members and committee chairs for another year of generous service.
Electoral Roll
Our Electoral Roll for 2025 stood at 95, an increase of 5 on 2024.
Safeguarding
No safeguarding issues were reported. We remain grateful to Mrs Diana Bendall for continuing to serve as our Parish Safeguarding Lead and for supporting the Revd Lansford Penn-Timity who holds that role for our Village Centre. Effective safeguarding was an ever more important priority in 2025.
Concert Series
2025 saw a programme of 10 concerts and we are grateful to Professor Geoff Chew for arranging an attractive programme for us once again.
The concerts took place as follows: 15th March Royal Holloway students, 5th April Joe Stapleton (with Geoff Chew), 17th May James Kirby's students, 24th May Isabella Morgan (piano), 5th July Ben Norris (piano), 19th July Julian Hellaby (piano), 8th November James Kirby (piano), 22nd November Julie Aherne and friends (chamber music), 14th December Geoff Chew (piano).
Social Events
Coffee Mornings were held on 22nd March, 17th May, 6th September and 26 October, Cream Teas on 14th June and 13th September, indoor Summer Fair/Coffee Morning on 12th July, St Jude's Stall at Village Fair on 21st June, Harvest Lunch on 12th October in church, Christmas Market on 29th November in the Village Centre, Mince Pie and Lebkuchen Tea on 13th December. Our grateful thanks to all who co-ordinated and contributed to these events.
Fabric
2025 has seen the progression of several projects. There are two new porch lights, one over the East entrance and one over the back door. Some damage had been sustained to the large west window (at the back of the church), and a repair is being progressed through our insurance company. We received a grant from the Benefact Trust to help pay for the stonework repairs which will be carried out in May 2026. The boilers were serviced and an electrical inspection took place. The felling of the large cedar tree in the churchyard was a major piece of work, carried out by RBC who had identified signs of decay and rot and considered the tree to be in a dangerous condition. Its removal, sad though it was, has opened up the view to allow us to admire the beautiful yew trees which had previously been obscured.
We are grateful to the churchwardens for all their work on these projects and to the group of church members who carried out some of the works mentioned above and continue to carry out minor maintenance.
Monsell Room lettings
Our thanks to Andrew Sheer for continuing to co-ordinate and administer all bookings. The users of the Monsell Room were Alcoholics Anonymous, Angeli's art classes, Egham Choral Society, Englefield Green Councillors' Surgery, Englefield Green Village Residents Association, Royal Holloway Music Department, Royal Holloway Women's Club, Ruth Hopkins' singing classes, Sue Lowe's cello classes. In addition to these regular bookings there were a few "one-off" hirings.
Mission and Outreach
Total cash donations £330 (2024 £640). This, plus donations in kind, enabled a total donation by weight of 809 kg (2024 1073kg) Thank you all who continue, even with ever-rising prices, to donate so generously. Thanks also to Geoff Chew for continuing to manage and pass on our donations.
Donations to other appeals: we were pleased to be able to send donations to WaterAid, the Royal British Legion, the Alzheimers Society and the Children’s Society.
Giving in kind: This is a Christian organisation, run by volunteers, which is operated by Mytchett Baptist Church. As well as knitted items they collect, sort and refurbish sewing machines and tools. The knitted items are packed in boxes which are sent abroad. Over the years we have delivered to Mytchett sewing machines, tools and lots of knitted items, including teddies, hats and jumpers for young children as well as blankets. As well as the items collected here at Church we collect and transport knitted items from Lynwood Village "Knit and Natter" group. We welcome donations of knitted items, tools and sewing machines both hand and electric as well as double knitting wool. We also welcome new knitters! So if you like to knit but need a project, please do talk to us about what is most needed. As they say, every little helps!
The Ship Newsletter
Our monthly newsletter is produced and circulated electronically by Brian Hooker who also uploads it to our website. Similarly, Andrew Sheer posts it on our Facebook page. Our thanks to them both. Our thanks also go to those who contribute articles; they are invariably interesting and well received. We are always looking for fresh input, please do let Brian or the Vicar know if you have an idea for an article and would like to write a short piece.
Digital Outreach
This continued through our Facebook page and website. We are grateful to everyone who helped us with publicity in 2025, including Brian Hooker, Andrew Sheer, Roger Downing and Guy Bunce.
Our Church Schools
2025 has been another challenging year for our schools. Following the disappointing outcome of the Ofsted inspection of our Infant School in 2024, the School Leadership Team and teaching Staff have put in an enormous amount of work to address the issues raised in the Ofsted Report. The follow-up inspection is scheduled for the Academic Year 2025-2026 but at the close of 2025, no inspection has yet taken place. For much of 2025, we have been working on the progress of our application to join the Enlighten Learning Trust and become an Academy. However, at the close of 2025 the Governors agreed to retain Voluntary Aided maintained school status and withdrew from the proposed merger. The budgets for both schools are beginning to look healthier as we continue to campaign for better funding to support the high number of our pupils who have additional needs. The move to single-form entry throughout the school, due to falling birth rates nationally, is under way and discussions continue to take place regarding a potential move to a single site.
We remain indebted to Pat Summers and Deborah Kidd, both members of St Jude’s Church, for their part in reading regularly with children from Year 3. Since our Vicar reduced her hours at the beginning of September, the Revd Jeremy Brown, Children and Families’ Minister at Christ Church, Virginia Water, has taken a greater share in leading Collective Worship at both schools. Jeremy also prepares the Worship Programme, and we are very grateful to him.
Once again, this year, we are especially grateful to Mrs Vicki Chiverton, Executive Head, and to Juan Pemberton, Chair of Governors, for their wise and dedicated leadership.
From the Vicar
2025 has been a busy and significant year for us at St Jude's, not least with its continuing conversations about the future. Throughout the year we have seen once again God honour the promise of his Word: "He who calls you is faithful and he will do it" (1 Thess. 5:24).
Our farewell to Andrew and Pat Reed, and our welcome to Lansford and Grace Penn-Timity and Jacqueline Esama-John brought both sorrow and joy. And I marked my own formal retirement with similar feelings, grateful to Bishop Andrew Watson for enabling me to stay on for a while longer in an honorary capacity.
My thanks to everyone who has served St Jude's so faithfully, often sacrificially, and in so many seen and unseen ways, through another year. A special welcome to those who joined our congregation in 2025.
May the God of hope fill you with peace and joy as you continue to trust in him. And I commend the words of Jesus to your prayers: 'The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into his harvest.' (Matthew 9:37-38)

My thanks to everyone who has served St Jude's so faithfully, often sacrificially, and in so many seen and unseen ways, through another year. A special welcome to those who joined our congregation in 2025.
May the God of hope fill you with peace and joy as you continue to trust in him. And I commend the words of Jesus to your prayers: 'The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into his harvest.' (Matthew 9:37-38)
