St Jude's in Spring

Lamb’s monogram, from St Stephen Aldwark (completed 1853)

St Jude’s Church was designed by Edward Buckton Lamb (1806-1869), a London-based architect who is usually known by his full name to distinguish him from his son, Edward Beckitt Lamb, also an architect.  Lamb, after training under L.N. Cottingham, worked as assistant to John Claudius Loudon (who was better known for his books on architecture than his actual buildings), and set up his own practice in about 1843. Lamb’s first church was St Philip, Clerkenwell, in London, opened in 1840.  This was closed in 1936 and subsequently demolished.  The chapel of Brompton Hospital, London has been substantially altered since Lamb’s time.   The private chapel at Carnsalloch, just outside Dumfries, lies in a wood,  now just a pile of rubble.  His other churches are illustrated below.

On the left is Lamb’s monogram, from St Stephen Aldwark (completed 1853).
