Come to our 150th Birthday Party
on the Village Green!

CELEBRATION HOG ROAST - our 150th 'birthday party'.

Despite the lack of a promised hog roast (the organiser failed to turn up!), our 150th birthday party, held on the Green, was thoroughly enjoyed for free by local residents, and friends and family of St Jude’s church. The blustery September weather didn’t seem to put too many people off coming along to celebrate 150 years of St Jude’s in the village. After some official words of opening by the Mayor of Runnymede, everyone enjoyed a BBQ, children (and adults) joined the teddy bears’ picnic, and children’s scavenger hunt and family treasure hunts challenges were attempted!

The anagram competition proved to be particularly successful with many entries.  For those of you wanting to know the answers, they were:

Baptise Hogs (Bishopsgate), Bond Setter (Bond Stree), Papa Hymn (Happy Man), Omelet Pot (Totem Pole), And Graves Ills (Savill Garden(s)), Porches Rope (Copper Horse), Ahoy Ally Lo Row (Royal Holloway), Fax Odd Ho Nun (Fox and Hound), Email Arm Row (War Memorial), Hotel Lyre (Holly Tree), Regent Eh (The Green), Ice Shop Roll (Coopers Hill), Lilac Halos (Social Hall), Mint Shawls (Smith’s Lawn), Clued Josh Toss (St Jude’s School), Engraved Sally (Valley Gardens).

Of all the correct entries, Eileen Williams was randomly drawn to win the luxury drinks hamper from Honeychurch Deli.

Twelve groups entered the family treasure hunt and this time it was easier to find an overall winner as while many entries scored 9/10 only one group achieved full marks.  The prize of a £20 Honeychurch Deli voucher and limited edition St Jude’s mugs was won by the team lead by Jo Hughes.  The answers to the treasure hunt were as follows:

At the junction of Bishopsgate Road and Cooper's Hill Lane what do the initials MDFCTA stand for? (Metropolitan Drinking Fountain & Cattle Trough Association),

According to the south end of the green in what year was Englefield Green described as "a most delightful spot" (1851 – according to an information board near the Barley Mow),

What must horse riders do when using the green? (Dismount & walk around the edge),

What is served by 3 swans? (Freedom),

What is the phone number of Traveline? (0871 2002233),

Who ordered that no parking of heavy goods or commercial vehicles may take place in the layby? (RBC),

What is the colour of the woodwork on ''the old cow sheds'? (Green),

What is the name of the pink house? (Englewick), What was donated by the Trieste Lodge in 1992? (A bench),

What make Whiskey is ‘drunk’ at 3:59 by John Fredrick Baker? (Fiat – the clue is the number plate of a car parked nearby).

Free Hog Roast

The organisers would like to thank everybody who helped on the day and a special thanks to Andy and the Cricket club for their help and support and the Englefield Green Residents Association for their contribution to the day.

I hope the pig continues to enjoy its freedom.
